Often the forgotten part of most bands but very important still when holding down the rhythm section, today I am writing about one of my all time favourite bands bass players from AC DC, so who is the bass guitarist for AC DC, none other than Cliff Williams.
Cliff Williams joined AC DC half way through 1977, he wasn’t their original bass guitarist joining after the “Let There Be Rock” record was recorded when the band dismissed their current bass guitarist and started holding open auditions to find a suitable replacement for him.
Cliff played four jam sessions before he was accepted into AC DC and then he started on the “Let There Be Rock” tour with them after that.
When Cliff joined AC DC the lineup was Angus Young – Guitar, Malcolm Young – Guitar, Phil Rudd – Drums and Bon Scott – Vocals.
Cliff Williams has been with AC DC since 1977 with only a brief rest from the band in 1991 due to health reasons.
His first studio record with the band was “Powerage” in 1978.
Cliff uses mostly Music Man bass guitars, the main choice being the StingRay Bass Guitar, but he has swayed every now and then to different bass guitars but always comes back to old faithful.
Now anyone who plays in bands knows the rhythm section of a band is very important, without it you wouldn’t have a canvas layer of sound to paint your lead and rhythm guitars over and AC DC is no different in this regard.
Solid bass lines are Cliff’s role in the songs and he does this masterfully, hugging the drums and rhythm guitar like a kid hugging their first blanket, so if you want to listen to master class of solid rock thumping bass lines you would look no further than Cliff Williams belting out tunes either live or in the studio and also if you are learning bass guitar AC DC songs are a great place to start too, not saying Cliff is easy to play, the fact is if you learn AC DC bass lines you will have a solid foundation to build on as you progress in your playing and also, probably the most important point is that they are good fun to play as well.
Also another well known trait is Cliff’s and Malcolm’s walks up to the microphones to sing backing vocals, other than that Cliff sits next to the drums pretty much super glued to the same spot, I’m watching the “Stiff Upper Lip” tour at the moment on Youtube so I can vouch for this while I’m writing this.
Other than that, here are a few facts about Cliff Williams, the bass guitarist from AC DC, to finish off with.

I hope you have learnt a bit more about the bass guitarist from AC DC as I have doing a bit of research into him.
AC DC was the reason I started playing guitar and got into playing music really in the first place, so they and Cliff hold a special place in my music heart and I’d say not a day goes by without hearing a track of theirs on my iPod or pulling one up on the computer too, they certainly are one of those
Cliff Williams is getting a little up there at the time of writing this age wise as all of the members of AC DC are, but hopefully they have a few more records and riffs in them yet and all going well Cliff will be holding down that rhythm section with Phil for a few more years yet.
So who is the Bass Guitarist for AC DC? Cliff Williams is of course….
