This is a question that gets asked generally by anyone who is starting their weight gain journey, do I really need protein for weight gain or why do I need protein for weight gain?
Here I’ll try and give you a quick explanation of why you need protein as the base of your diet if you want to see any weight gain at all, this is the case if you are training with weights or not, as we have to remember that some people are trying to put on weight due to sickness or injury and also lots of people who have been skinny all their life and just can’t gain any weight at all, all of these people need a solution and protein is just a part of it.
Protein is an essential nutrient for your body, it doesn’t matter what your goal is it should be a part of your daily nutrition plan no matter what, for people looking to gain weight it is the nutrition base to work from, protein foods can come in many forms, beef, nuts, cheese, chicken, fish, beans, eggs, yogurt, milk and protein shakes to name a few sources that are a little higher in the protein dept than other foods.
Now why do you need protein to gain weight, you need it because the human body is full of proteins, it forms a part of every process, cell maintenance / growth and movement in your body and also if you are training to gain weight, you need it for recovery of your muscles after training.
How will it help me gain weight you ask?
In the first instance where protein is involved in every process in your body you need to take care of these processes with nutrition as your body doesn’t magically produce these protein and amino acids (The building blocks of protein) for you, you can do this by eating protein in the foods above across the day with your meals in small amounts.
Eating small amounts of protein across the day also helps with the second point, if you are following a gym weight training plan to gain weight, you need to take care of muscle recovery after training, the best way to do this is with a protein powder shakes, these may have carbohydrates in them too and sometimes other ingredients too, have a shake straight away after training and this, along with extra protein throughout the day will help your body and more importantly your muscles recover before the next time you train and over time all this recovery means your muscles will adapt to the extra work load and get bigger and before you know it you have gained weight.
So protein along with carbohydrates and fats should form the nutrition base of anyone’s diet who is looking to gain weight, protein across the day is essential to the weight gain process.
I’d be looking at eating every two to three hours in the day when trying to gain weight, you can have a look at a suggested weight gain diet for skinny guys here and it will give you a bit of an idea and guideline for the types of foods to eat and also when to eat as timing is critical to gaining weight.
In conclusion, why do you need protein to gain weight, you just do and I’m guessing nine times out of ten that if you don’t have protein rich meals across your day you won’t be giving your body the chance to gain weight, start small, be consistent, set your nutrition goals and enjoy the eating journey, the results will come on the scales.
