New Farm Park is a great park nestled in the suburb of New Farm here in Brisbane City.
It’s a historic park located at the southern end of New Farm Peninsula on the Brisbane River.
If you think of Brisbane Parks or ask a local who has lived here in Brisbane for a while, they will certainly tell you that New Farm Park is one of the best parks in Brisbane and also one of the best in the Brisbane City area.
I first went there with my wife when we had only one child for a look and also since then we have had a birthday party there too.
Also I might add here, if you are thinking of having a birthday party there for your kids, get to the park early to get a spot!
I had to drive from the North Side of Brisbane to get to the park early and arrived at around 8am.
There were people already setup for their kids birthday party already!
This wasn’t just starting to setup their kids party either.
It was already fully setup and ready to go party mode, so a hour or more work easily.
So these people certainly get there to mark their party spot early!
New Farm Park is pretty big place overall.
It covers around 37 acres which includes all of the below and more.
- Lots of walks (which are by the river as well)
- Sports oval
- Picnic areas
- Barbecue areas
- Kids play ground (which is a massive playground area)
- Rose gardens
- Sports grounds (oval for many sports)
- Bowls Club
- Powerhouse (Creative Arts hub of Brisbane)
- And more!
The kid’s area of the park is amazing.
So make sure to take your picnic blanket and settle in for the day.
It would give any indoor playground a run for its money, except this is free!
You can generally keep an eye on your kids easily if you were close to the playground.
This lets them explore what is one of the best kids adventure parks without you having to helicopter them too much.
The playground for kids takes up a large area which is built around these massive fig trees.
The playground has forts, bridges, swings, slides, a dragon with eggs for the kids to sit on, rope climbing web, monkey bars and much more.
There is plenty of toilets nearby, lots of shade for picnics, picnic tables, barbecues, coffee kiosk and the frequent visit by ice cream vans throughout the day.
History of New Farm Park Brisbane
Here is a little bit of the history of New Farm Park for you.
The land that the park now stands on was originally a farm.
It was built to supply food for the recently founded convict settlement on the Brisbane River.
Around 1829 convict laborers were planting crops here.
A racecourse was built on the site in 1846 and this operated until 1913.
Then the land for the park was acquired by the Brisbane City Council.
In 1928 the Powerhouse became operational and started to supply power to local Brisbane suburbs.
1948 was the year Harry Oakman, a landscape artist designed the park as we see it now.
During the late 1990s “The Summerhouse” kiosk was based in New Farm Park.
“The Summerhouse” was a popular meeting point for weekend breakfasts and won many awards over many years.
Sadly during 2000 “The Summerhouse” was destroyed by fire and has yet to be rebuilt.
In 2000 “The Powerhouse” opened its doors as an Arts Centre for Brisbane.
Now New Farm Park is enjoyed as a place where you can walk, run and play in iconic surroundings in the middle of Brisbane.
New Farm Park, more than just a great playground
Overall, New Farm Park is just a great place to go and hang out.
Lots of open space to spread your wings while being nestled in a little bit of Brisbane City history also.
It’s great for kids and adults alike, you can choose what you want to do for the day, for the hour, the choice is yours.
Whether it be a quiet space on a blanket reading a book for the afternoon, walking the tracks around the gardens, people watching for the day tucked in amongst the trees, exploring the Powerhouse and the river side, the mayhem of the kids playground or just kicking the footy around with a few mates, New Farm Park has a lot to offer.
