I recently travelled to Melbourne and headed into the city for work and found myself right in the middle of the action at the Docklands. While I was there, the crews were flat out setting up for the Ed Sheeran concert (as you’ll see in the video below) and it got me thinking. Staying at Clarion Apartments South Melbourne
During this trip, I stayed at the Clarion Apartments South Melbourne on Palmerston Crescent. It’s a cracking shout if you want to avoid the immediate chaos of the stadium precinct after the final siren.
The travel time from the Clarion to the stadium is surprisingly quick:
- By Car: It took me about 10 minutes to drive across, depending on the traffic on Kings Way.
- By Tram: You can hop on the Route 96 and be there in about 20 minutes.

It’s like staying in the city, without being in the city if that makes sense. Also an old pub within walking distance, so great for sales reps looking for a central base for the week.
Essential details: Height limits and accessibility
Before you load up the 4WD, you need to check your clearance. Most of the onsite parking at Marvel Stadium has a height restriction of 2.1 metres. If you are taller than that, you will struggle to get into the underground levels.
For those with accessibility needs, the stadium is well equipped. There are designated disabled parking bays near the lifts on all levels. If you have pre-booked a disabled spot, just let the attendants know when you arrive and they will point you to the best bay near the lifts.
A brief history of the stadium names
It is hard to believe this place has been a staple of the Melbourne skyline since 2000. Before it was the Marvel themed powerhouse we know today, it went through a few identity shifts.
It originally opened as Colonial Stadium. Shortly after, it became the Telstra Dome (a name many locals still use out of habit). In 2009, it became Etihad Stadium, before finally being rebranded as Marvel Stadium in 2018. It was the first stadium in Australia to feature a retractable roof, which has saved many a cricket match from the Melbourne weather!
Plan ahead for a smooth night
Melbourne traffic is unpredictable, especially on game day. I always suggest leaving early and giving yourself an extra 45 minutes. It gives you time to grab a decent coffee or a bite to eat near the harbour before the gates open.
Most importantly, look after your mates. If you are planning on having a few pots during the match or the concert, do not drink and drive. The police presence around the Docklands is heavy during major events, and it is simply not worth it.
