Play Better Be Home Soon by Crowded House

Written by Troy Spro

Better Be Home Soon is a song by Crowded House off the Temple of Low Men album and below, I’ll do my best to help you to play this song on your guitar.

Crowded House at this time was made up of Neil Finn, Nick Seymour, and Paul Hester.

Better Be Home Soon was released in 1988 as a single as well as on Temple of Low Men at the same time.

It is a great and relatively easy song to play on your acoustic guitar too.

I have played this song many times over the years since that release but thought it was time to revisit it on the acoustic guitar and share the chords with you.

The chords for guitar are below for you with a few notes too, and also the video for the song off Youtube so you don’t have to go hunting for it.

Better Be Home Soon Lyrics

These are the lyrics for the song with the chords for you above the words they are sung on.

Intro C

Verse
C                                    Am                                  Em7                 G F
Somewhere deep inside, something’s got a hold on you,
C                      Am                                      Em7            G
And it’s pushing me aside, see it stretch on forever.

Chorus
C                                            F
And I know I’m right, for the first time in my life,
G                                                    C             G
That’s why I tell you, you’d better be home soon.

Verse
C                                     Am                             Em7             G
Stripping back the coats of lies and deception,
C                           Am                                     Em7       G
Back to nothingness, like a week in the desert.

Chorus
C                                            F
And I know I’m right, for the first time in my life,
G                                                     C         C / Cb / A (* See Below)
That’s why I tell you, you’d better be home soon.

Bridge
Bbsus2          Dsus2                               G
Don’t say no, don’t say nothing’s wrong,
Bbsus2                                      Asus2                        Dsus2
Cause when you get back home maybe I’ll be gone.

C                     Am       Em7       G
Ohh a oh oh ohhhh

C                    Am        Em7

F         F         Bbsus2         Bbsus2

Verse

C                                Am                           Em7          G
It would cause me pain if we were to end it
C                       Am                      Em7                 G
But I could start again you can depend on it.

Chorus
C                                            F
And I know I’m right, for the first time in my life.
G                                                    Am
That’s why I tell you, you’d better be home soon.
Dsus2                   F                    G
Oh, that’s why I tell you,

You’d better be home, soon….

Notes on playing Better Be Home Soon

The intro to the song is pretty easy if you listen to the video below.

Neil just holds the C chord for a while and then the verse starts.

Also above I have the (* See Below) part for the lead into the Bridge.

Listen again to this part on the video as you just need to drop one finger down after the C to Cb which leads into the A to Bb.

Other than that, feel the song, play through it a few times and you will create your own feel and timings.

For instance coming out of the Bridge you can finger pick the chord slowly, or strum once for each chord and build back into the last chorus.

That’s about it for this great Crowded House song.

Up for discussion now is whether Crowded House is a New Zealand band or from Australia?

Anyway, enjoy and I’ll pop another song up sooner than later, enjoy!
