Day One and we are off to Dalby

Written by Troy Spro

As I said prior we decided to head off to Dalby over breakfast with no real plans in place other than we knew we had to reach Dalby before the evening.

We headed off around mid afternoon and travelled the 220km to get there as we are on the north side of Brisbane.

The road was great to drive on with plenty of sites to look at on the way in between the pit stops for the kids.

With the pit stops the drive for us from Brisbane to Dalby took a little over three hours.

You can read more about the drive here (Brisbane to Dalby) and the different options depending on which side of Brisbane you live on.

We arrived in Dalby quite late and drove around the town for a while having a look around.

Then we parked the car and booked into the Motor Inn that took our fancy, this was the Drovers Motor Inn.

The Drovers Inn is pretty much central to everything you could need in town.

It is quite a new modern motor inn with two stories so you get a view of the town’s horizon from the upper floor too, this is great for sunrise and sunset photos.

We were going to have dinner at the Dalby RSL tonight, we passed it on the way to the motor inn and after settling in and unpacking we were off.

Only off to the car park though as the sign on the door said the Dalby RSL was closed until further notice.

What happened?

We found out the next day from talking to a local while we were out walking that the Dalby RSL had a few internal problems and had to shut completely.

A bit of a shame and I would have to say it is the first time I have heard of a RSL closing completely as the RSL is usually an integral part of a community.

I wonder if any other RSL have shut down in Australia?

I’d say there would be a few that have closed due to the town’s population drop but not many, if any that have closed due to other circumstances.

I won’t go into details of what we were told as there is two sides to each story but the fact remains the Dalby RSL remains closed and has since been broken into and the insides destroyed too.

Back on track now, after driving around a little while more we decided to get fish and chips from the shop just down the road from the inn.

It was actually very good fish and chips too, not quite as good as our local but still not too bad on price, quality and volume of chips (Which is an important KPI for most fish and chip shops for us).

After eating and getting the kids ready for bed we started to plan the holiday as best we could with just a rough outline of what we were going to try and do.

We decided to stay in Dalby for another night and head off to early to the Dalby Information Centre to look at the best things to do in and around Dalby for the day.

So off to sleep to recharge for what should be a great day of adventure tomorrow.
