A bit of a kids day in Townsville for us today, then we are heading up to Kissing Point to look at the Jezzine Barracks and the Kissing Point Fort.
This is the 14th day on our Outback Queensland Road Trip.
We slept in a little again and took the kids for a walk across the road from the caravan park.
The walkway runs from Rowes Bay Beachfront Holiday Park right down to the Cape Palleranda Conservation Park.
We didn’t walk all the way, but still did a fairly decent walk to lead us into morning tea
After this there are quite a few playgrounds around the caravan park area, so we headed down to one of them for an hour or so.
After that, it was down to The Strand for a look at a few more playgrounds and the views.
The iconic waterside promenade of Townsville is called The Strand.
If you holiday in Townsville, you have to head to The Strand to check it out.
The Strand is a 2.2 km long palm tree lined beachfront promenade that has walkways, bike paths, picnic spots, swimming beaches, The Rockpool, playgrounds, and more for you to enjoy.
Most, if not all people who have visited Townsville at any stage would have walked along The Strand.
After walking The Strand it was time for lunch at the caravan park followed by a swim in the caravan parks pool.
The water was freezing, but you know kids, their lips can be blue and they can be shaking and shivering cold and they will still want to swim!
Another bite to eat and we headed off again to Kissing Point and Jezzine Barracks.
This just used to be an area with basically one track up to the Kissing Point Lookout.
Now it is an amazing 15 hectare heritage precinct where you can look at some Australian Army history while taking in the great views of Magnetic Island, the port, the rock pool, Castle Hill, and some of Townsville.
There is a fair bit of history around the area as it was still used by the military up until 2006.
The Kissing Point / Jezzine Barracks area also has a lot of indigenous history too as it was the centre of a common food foraging area for the Wulgurukaba and the Bindal people.
It’s certainly a place you can spend a lot of time exploring and getting some exercise in at the same time.
We took in the sunset up there and headed down to walk around the rock pool.
It would have been good having another half and hour to an hour of daylight up there with all of the history and walking tracks.
Then it was time to head back to the caravan park for a quick and easy dinner and then settle into getting the kids asleep.
This is so they will be ready for our trip to Magnetic Island tomorrow.
Tomorrow is going to be a great day!
