We had been living in Morayfield for a while and then shifted a bit closer into Brisbane City, which is a few suburbs over into the Narangba area and although we had an old fish and chip shop we use to frequent they went off the boil in regards to serving size and also value for money, which led us into where we currently frequent and we ask ourselves now every weekend, is this the best Fish and Chip Shop in Brisbane and more importantly for us, Brisbane Northside?
We have a young family and have taken it upon ourselves to have a takeaway meal pretty much every Saturday night.
This lets the hugs and kisses have a night off preparing food and also it is a treat for us for the week, something we can all look forward to.
We vary these nights with Pizza, Chinese, Thai Food, McDonalds, Hungry Jacks and of course Fish and Chips.
We were at a bit of a loss when or old faithful fish and chip shop wasn’t cutting it anymore and also we, we meaning the whole family got food poisoning one night too which was the last straw for the place we had been going to for a few years.
Since that time we struggled to find a replacement although we were keen to fill the void.
We found a pretty good one up Caloundra way but that is a bit too far to travel for fish and chips let alone going there every Saturday night.
Most, even though there weren’t many fell short of fish and chip shop expectation and were either too expensive (One shop had a $9 price tag on a family size chips) or just didn’t cut it in respect for the actual cooking part, soggy chips, bad burgers and out of the box frozen potato scallops.
I had even resorted to cancelling Saturday night takeaway for the standard spaghetti and eggs on toast as I was finding that more enjoyable than some of the meals we were getting when the squids were getting theirs from the big chains in fast food.
Then one day it happened, after endless Saturdays with painful choices and let downs we by chance drove past a fish and chip shop in Kallangur, it was filled to the brim with customers so it had to be good right and as they say, the rest is now history.
This fish and chip shop takes about 15 minutes for me to drive there and I tell you what for the best fish and chips in Brisbane I’d probably be driving for half an hour to this place.
I’m probably 90% sure there is Kiwi owners of this place as there are Kbars, Kinas and Muscles in the chiller, NZ Hot Dog on the menu and also Lemon and Paeroa in the drink fridge too.
Where do I start in regards to the food?
They have the best chips and this is because of a few reasons, fresh oil, well drained, perfectly cooked with the correct amount of crunch, chicken salt and also serving size, $3 worth of chips would have to be at least two dinner plates piled up pretty high I’d say and feeds a family of two adults and two squids (Soon to be 3 squids when one starts eating solids) and we wouldn’t probably change the $3 worth of chips once the third squid gets to the right age for takeaways on Saturday nights.
Next is the fish, you get the choice of battered or crumbed and the crumbed comes in a peppered version standard so if you want to have just a straight crumbed you have to ask.
We usually just get cod but they have eight different types of fish to choose from and I tell you the fillets are big too.
There is also a fish option for the squids which we discovered and this works well for eating too, they have little fish called fish bites and you buy these in six unit amounts and these have the same options as the bigger fish in regards to battered and the two selections of crumbed.
Now usually for children meals or selections anywhere they are just bad, frozen then cooked, not even sure if they are the meat in them you have ordered, not so with these fish bites, they are fish prepared the same way as the adult’s fish and so this makes for a pretty good little meal for the squids.
We have had the battered (By accident and in a fish burger) and both crumbed options in the fish and they are all great, the pepper version of the crumbed may not be suitable for all children but our little man eats it so it can’t be too bad.
Burgers, burgers, burgers….
Yes they do burgers, there are about ten different types and I usually just go for the standard hamburger.
I have had the fish burger and the hug n kisses has had the vege burger and they are great burgers and tick all the boxes in regards to freshness and flavour.
Also I have noticed the Gut Buster Burger, I haven’t seen or had this burger but I’d say with what I’ve seen from this fish and chip shop it would be a big burger for sure.
Another thing they do that is big is the Loaded Fries topped with bacon, cheese, sour cream and spring onions.
Now I have seen the loaded fries and it certainly is a big meal and very loaded, it comes in a container and it is so loaded the lid won’t even shut so they have to put it in a bag for you.
Consistency is the key to any business and fish and chips is no different in this regard.
We have pretty much been getting the same takeaway meal for many, many months now, you know what you are going to get with this fish and chip shop and the quality is there every time and I hope we never get let down.
The only let down for us was they weren’t open over Christmas and we were going through withdrawals for the whole holidays.
Who would of thought you could write so much about a fish and chip shop on the Northside of Brisbane.
