I arrived for my haircut at Stay Fresh Barbers in Chermside at about 12.35pm, my hair was starting to get long from my last visit to the Barber and it was time for another chop chop session and also time to tick off another Barber on my Brisbane’s Best Barber Bucket list.
Stay Fresh Barbers was easy to find as it is on the man road in Chermside, if you are travelling in from the north side of Brisbane like me you just cruise past the Chermside Shopping Centre and just after that on the left you can park right in front of the barber shop.
There are plenty of car parks around this area on the main road, I drive past there all the time so I get to see it fairly often.
I have just started to grow my winter beard too, so this haircut should start to emphasise the beard a little more, so no shave this time unlike my last visit to the barber.
When you walk into Stay Fresh Barbers, take a seat and look around there is a blue slate pool table, Play Station with a flat screen on the wall with a fighting game ready to go, hip hop mix tapes pumping out on the stereo filling the place with good vibes, Wu Tang Clan, Bob Marley, Tupac and Eminem posters on the wall, T Shirts to buy down the back of the shop on the wall, four barber chairs working already or ready to go, two waiting couches to sit on and it was clean and tidy.
There was a family in there getting their hair cut when I arrived so it was noisy and there was a bit of hustle and bustle around the place with a few other people hanging out around the empty cutting chairs.
The only thing I can say at this point was that I walked in and didn’t really know where to go, where to sit or what the protocol of waiting etc was, there wasn’t a “Hello, take a seat and we will be with you in a moment” happening so it felt a bit funny as you just walk in and find a place to sit.
I’m guessing that if you have been to Stay Fresh Barbers before you might know how it works, but as a first timer it felt a bit funny and uncomfortable at the beginning, it always felt like the people who walked in after you may get served first if they went and sat closer because the staff weren’t onto who was coming and going.
There was two chairs running today for cuts and I only had to wait about 15 to 20 minutes which isn’t too bad at all if you are looking for a quick cut, I’m sure it would be more busier on a Saturday morning though and later in the afternoons when people have knocked off work or are looking at getting their ears lowered before going out on the weekend.
I sat in the chair, asked for the same haircut, short back and sides with a side part on top, fade my beard into the sides and the sides into the top please and we were underway.
There was good banter throughout the haircut and as I’m a Kiwi plenty to talk about in common with the barber.
After only a short time he had finished.
A good cut and I wouldn’t expect anything less as he had been cutting for a fair while and I’m sure more capable of doing a lot more intricate designs and cuts than I asked for too.
So Stay Fresh Barber Shop was great little barber shop with a good feel about it, funky tunes and vibe with quick hair cut and good quality, also note here was the price, without telling you how much it was, it was very good value for money if you are the type on man that needs to get a trim or get the doo done every couple of weeks.
So, my question for my bucket list of whether Stay Fresh Barber Shop is the Best Barber Shop in Brisbane?
You will have to decide yourself I think, it has a completely different vibe to the previous barber’s I have been into so far and I will be looking forward to going into the city shop too.
I can tell you this though, if value for money and a good haircut is what you are lacking from your current choice of barber and you live in the Chermside area of Brisbane, I’d be getting down to Stay Fresh or sending your man here as it was pretty good for a haircut.
*Update :
On the Stay Fresh Barber Facebook page there has been an update as I was in the process of writing this, they have temporarily shut the shop for a week at the beginning of June 2014 to upgrade the shop and also by the looks, introduce new staff and manager, although my experience wasn’t the best in regards to service, the haircut was good and I think I may have to revisit the Chermside store when it opens again or take the trip to the Brisbane CBD store to see what the experience is there.
*Update 2 :
Stay Fresh Barbers at Chermside has shut down, there hasn’t been any notification on the Stay Fresh Barber Chermside Facebook page but this Barber Shop has been emptied and the shop was for lease again.
