Hughenden Caravan Park is the destination for us today on our Outback Queensland Road Trip as it is a scheduled travel day.
It is also known as the Hughenden Allen Terry Caravan Park as well named after a local councillor.
There is a story behind this name and the way it is spelt too, you can read more about here if you want to, “Allen or Alan?”
It’s a standard pack up this morning for our Jayco Hawk.
Get the kids doing something else while we clean, fold up, stack, drop the roof, attach to the tow ball and check out.
My friends at Google Maps tell me the trip today will take 5 hours and 42 minutes.
We all know it will take longer to drive than this, and so we plan for it.
You have to allow for towing and kids in these trips, we were expecting a long day!
So we said our goodbyes to Mount Isa and set off for Hughenden.
There is plenty of things to stop and see on the way out of Mount Isa too.
One of the first stops was to the Kalkadoon and Mitakoodi Monument which is a monument that pays tribute to the Kalkadoon and Mitakoodi indigenous people of the area.
There is a lot of history behind this monument, so if you want you can do a bit of reading yourself, Kalkadoon and Mitakoodi Monument.
Our next quick stop was the Burke and Wills Memorial Obelisk.
As you can see, it isn’t much of an obelisk.
Also, we noticed that at many of the sights you can stop to see the councils have put rubbish bins so close to monuments.
This means you have a lovely rubbish bin or the like in almost every photo.
As well as the man who decided to work on his ute right behind the obelisk in the photo above.
We had enough petrol to make it to Cloncurry for a quick fuel top up at the Puma.
From Cloncurry it is only another hour and a half to get us to Julia Creek.
Julia Creek is a little town of around 400 people.
There is a park and toilets called the Peter Dawes Park in the middle of town.
It is easy to park your camper trailer or caravan and a great little spot to stretch the legs on the way through to Hughenden.
There is also a little playground for the kids too, which is handy.
If you make it to Julia Creek from Mount Isa, there is only three more hours of travel to go to Hughenden.
We left Julia Creek and headed off for our next little stop, Richmond.
When we got to Richmond we found the Richmond Information Centre and decided to get a coffee.
The cafe there is called the Moonrock Cafe and there is a big dinosaur in front of it.
I’d tell you from experience now, their coffee is not worth stopping for at the Moonrock Cafe.
Try somewhere else!
We had one more pit stop to make to get petrol before Hughenden.
We backtracked to the Richmond Roadhouse for a fill up and also another quick toilet break.
The Richmond Pioneer Cemetery is right next door to the roadhouse too.
So you can have a quick look at the old graves etc when you fill up!
This was the final stop on the drive through to the Hughenden Caravan Park.
Hughenden Caravan Park, we made it!
First impressions of the Hughenden Caravan Park are great!
Lots of grass and plenty of room on the campsites too.
They had rung us to make sure few were still checking in as they had people circling around town ready to take our spot.
No wonder, it certainly is a nice spot.
The kitchen area is big, with a TV too, and the toilet / showers are great too.
It is a pity we only had scheduled one night here to break up the drive to Townsville.
We should of stayed for longer as there is plenty to do and the park is good too.
So after a long day of just over seven hours of travel and hen setting up the Jayco.
We settled into the night with soup and rolls, got ready for sleep, and watched the sun set amazingly over Hughenden.
Tomorrow we are on the last leg of our travels, we are heading to Townsville for a few days.
