We decided to head off for camping at Seventeen Seventy for a long weekend.
It is called both names, Seventeen Seventy as well as 1770 too, just so you know.
The first stages of planning our holiday travel was picking which camping ground to camp at and also what to do in Seventeen Seventy once we got there?
Using my friend Google I/we did the standard search and we settled on four choices of different places to stay.
We had to take in to account it was a long weekend and that there would be a fair amount of people wanting to do the same as us and camp at Seventeen Seventy.
I thought I’d share these with you as well, just incase you need to ring around or check them out before you call them.
Their addresses and contact phone numbers will be at the bottom of the page too for you.
Long story short, we booked one of these camping grounds and then found out one of the kids had qualified for the next level of school cross country.
So we had to cancel booking with one of the above, lost our down payment, and then we rebooked with another that we found out was closer to the beach and also cheaper in the end too.
So it ended up being a better outcome.
Where did we stay camping at Seventeen Seventy?
We settled for Captain Cook Holiday Village for camping at Seventeen Seventy.
It is just out of the township and on the main road, Captain Cook Drive, Seventeen Seventy.
So all that was left to do was wait for the weekend to arrive, pack our bags, pack the camper trailer, and get up early for the travel.
So after a late night getting ready we were off to Seventeen Seventy, early.
I loaded up what I could into the car and also attached the camper trailer to the car ready to go as well.
Captain Cook Holiday Village is on the right main and only road into Seventeen Seventy.
You have turn off at Agnes Water and head through to Seventeen Seventy from there.
We arrived around lunchtime, this was good as the kids could eat and go for a walk while I set up the camper.
First impressions of the camping ground was good, lots of trees, the staff were friendly and helpful too.
Next up was the setup of the camper trailer for the stay.
Our site was across the road from one of the toilet blocks too, so this was handy at night with the kids.
Captain Cook Holiday Village has cabins, villas, bungalows, kitchens, laundry, swimming pool, powered sites, unpowered sites, and also a track to the beach at the back of the park.
So it has everything you could want for camping at Seventeen Seventy.
We went for a drive to pick up our boarding passes for Lady Musgrave Cruises for Sunday.
We were told that it is better to pick up the boarding passes earlier, especially with kids, so you don’t have to line up early in the morning at the office prior to getting on the boat.
I have written about our experience with Lady Musgrave Cruises here, “A Day on the Reef”.
After that we just went for a bit of a walk 1770 around and came back to settle in for the night.
The next day we just hung around the beach pretty much for most of the day, why would you not want to hang around here!
The kids played at the playground and also in the water for hours.
If you head down to the car park by the 1770 Camping Ground you will have access to the beach, walking tracks, covered picnic tables, playground for the kids, showers to wash the sand off, and toilets too.
What more could you want if you were spending a day at the beach!
We headed back to the campsite, ate lunch and then went to explore the beach behind the camping site before heading off to have fish and chips by the beach.
The beach behind Captain Cook Holiday Village reminds me of a beach close to my home town in New Zealand, which is Matata Beach.
You wouldn’t swim there much as it gets deep really fast and most of the waves are dumpers.
Good fishing beach though if you like to cast, there were a few fishermen around when we were there.
The track has a few hills and is dirt, so be prepared for a bit of a trek, not a walk in the park.
After this, it was time for fish and chips, we went back to a fish and chip shop we spotted in Agnes Waters.
The name of this shop is Off the Hook Fish and Chips and the fish and chips were awesome.
Pretty well priced, not as good as our local though.
The barramundi were big, and the chips were well cooked and generous in serving size.
Their address and contact details are below too if you are in the 1770 area and need good fish and chips.
We took our food back to the main area in 1770 by the beach, set up on a picnic table and watched the sun go down.
Then it was time sleep as we were off to Lady Musgrave Island the next day.
You can read more about our Lady Musgrave experience here, “A day out at the Reef”.
I tell you what, it was a great day out on the reef too, make sure you check it out.
The photos you can get on the day are amazing!
