Now we have been here in this house coming up to two years now and last year was the first time I had to get firewood delivered here.
One load was enough to do us last winter and it was pretty much perfect timing right down to the last fire and the coming of spring.
So this year again, after no contact I’ll be ringing up the number of our firewood man to see if he is still in the firewood game and also to see if he is still delivering it to the Northside of Brisbane too.
Now if he isn’t I’ll have to go back to plan B which is to drive around our area until I see a sign on somebody’s fence that sells firewood locally, look online in my favourite search engine and lastly is where I found old mate last time, at the local Caboolture Market on a Sunday sitting on his trailer full of wood.
Now this year too I am in two minds whether to store the firewood in the shed again or fix up the back fence area properly from the last owners and to make it a dry place for the wood to be stored.
There is currently a couple of bits of roof tin there that the last owners of the house used and just put over the top of their firewood, I’m sure though from what I see when it rains it won’t be a good place to store firewood so it stays dry for me without doing a bit of work on the area.
I have been keeping all the broken tree branches again and storing them for kindling for the coming cold, they make great fire starters as I will be giving the pine cones a miss after a comment on here from an expert that said not to use pine cones due to their explosive properties.
Also on my to do list this year in relation to having a fire and fireplace is addressing the top of the chimney, it was either knocked off by the birds around or blown off, there was a few rivets off and it was hanging on by just one rivet when I found it and I just did a quick repair job on it to keep the rain out and until I bought a tall enough extension ladder to get up onto our roof properly, easily and also safely.
I’ll have unscrew it and bring the whole chimney top down and re do the rivets again and then put it back up.
I’m planning to do this in the coming weeks while I have a few holidays over the Easter / Anzac holidays.
Other than that I’m hoping I can get the same firewood delivery to our house here on the Northside of Brisbane as it was quite cheap and very good burning firewood too.
I’ll let you know if he is still in the firewood delivery business and still has good prices.
* Update ::
I text my firewood man here on Brisbane’s Northside this morning and he is good to go, delivery in the next couple of days, split and ready to burn.
Also I have checked out my chimney top, I will be needing a new one as the spot welds definitely have broken.
I was thinking as I went to fix it, the heat would be too great for anything else up there and the melting point too of the screws or rivets maybe an issue.
So time to get a new one and screw that back on before it gets to cold here and we need to light the fire, it is certainly getting close in some mornings and late evenings already.
