Johnny Voodoo’s Barber Shop, is this the Best Barber Shop in Brisbane?

First impressions are great and this is true with Barber Shops too, so on my quest and to start the ball rolling I ventured down to Camira to see if Johnny Voodoo’s Barber Shop is the Best Barber Shop in Brisbane?

Now this shop is a little out of the way for me living on the Northside of Brisbane but I have ventured into the Camira area before and more than likely have driven past Johnny Voodoos also at some stage.

I rung in the morning before leaving to see what time I could book in for and found that you don’t need a booking which I am finding standard these days for most Barbers, I guess you are there to get a haircut and these generally shouldn’t take long for a man unless you are stuck firmly in the 80’s metal scene and holding on to that perm.

I also asked at this time whether I had to book in for a face shave too, no problem, just tell us when you get here and we will do it for you after your cut.

I did a little research before I left in the morning too, just to see what I’d be up for and Johnny Voodoo’s cater for many different styles of haircuts old style and new too, so if you want it, generally form what I can tell they will be able to do it for you and do it well.

So I arrived at Johnny Voodoo’s Barber Shop around 12pm and walked in, was greeted and sat down.

There were 5 chairs in there, with two staff on and two chairs working today, now I must add after a bit of scouting around in the morning you will have to call or see if your Barber opens on a Monday as most don’t open Sunday and Mondays but Johnny Voodoo’s does.

It has a good feel to it from first sit down and the first look around, there were 2 people getting cuts and 4 people waiting when I arrived.

There certainly was a lot to take in and to look at when I sat down on one of the old green theatre waiting chairs, they are a set from the 1930’s from the old Toowoomba Cinema apparently and still as comfy as they would have been watching Gone with the Wind back then.

The floor was one half black and white vinyl tiles and under the barber chairs was a checker plate patterned floor, the walls are covered with the Barber mirrors obviously and also a lot of stickers, pictures, posters, trinkets, models, skateboard decks all related to tattoos, cars, hot rods, barber’s, beards and hair products.

Looking around more to the front the front counter is shaped as a bamboo bar complete with roof on it, the duke box is in this area too belting out a good mix of music continuously just loud enough you can hear but doesn’t impact on your experience, I knew a fair amount of the tracks playing too so this was a good thing.

Looking towards the back of the shop it looks like a bar and there is a clothing rack there filled with T’s and Hoodies etc to purchase.

Also finally there is three air conditioners on the wall, so it was nice and cool too which is a good thing in Queensland as you do get caught out by having only one in a shop and your patrons melt through summer, so 22 degrees is a good temperature to get the chop chop done and have a shave too.

I waited for a while for the others to get there cuts finished and now it was my turn, I was escorted to one of the wooden old school Barber chairs and took my seat.

There is an honesty system of sorts here at Johnny Voodoo’s except for Saturdays that are busy, they ask who is next and if your honest you will find your place and know when you arrive, I think that if it gets full not only the customer but the workers would lose track of when everyone came in, so a good decision for a different approach on a Saturday morning.

“How would you like it?”, “Short please on the sides and back, bit longer on the top with a side part please”

“Number 1 or number 2 at the back?”, “One please, it grows so fast and thick so I need it short”

And so my Barber Shop Crawl journey had begun with a flick of the clippers.

The conversation was great while I was getting the cut and like I have said above there is always plenty to look at, the cut was done in no time, good cut and short too.

This is the way I like it after growing my hair for over a month and starting to look like a sheep.

I moved onto the chair next door for the shave, now I haven’t had a blade shave before so this was a first for me.

I asked if many people get it done and it is a bit of a novelty thing, but none the less a good experience if you haven’t had it done before.

They hot towel you and put some kind of cream on to soften up the whiskers I’d say and then comes the shaving cream on the brush, I couldn’t see what was happening too much as I was on the recline in the chair but the shaving cream smelt like it had a slight lemon tinge to it and also it was cold which adds to the experience after the hot towels have come off.

When they shave, as in haircuts they do it in sections and drag their fingers across to tighten the skin and then run the blade across, not an easy to do task and certainly something that would have risks if you rushed it.

A few more hot towels later and a little more shaving, an application of after shave and another cream and I was complete.

It is actually a very close shave and a good experience if you haven’t had it done before, I’d recommend Johnny Voodoo’s for this anytime.

So, in the end, I paid my money and walked outside a changed man, new haircut, freshly shaved, good conversation and plenty to look at, I can see why Johnny Voodoo’s Barber Shop would have a following of old faithful customers.

My only disappointment was the owner wasn’t there for the day as he had worked at the Woolangabba Antique Centre the day before from 10am to 3pm cutting and promoting, I think they head down there once a month to cut and also do a lot of other promotions around the area too.

I’ll catch up with him hopefully next time I’m through and ask him a bit more about the history of his business and what got him to where his business is today.

So to my question about whether Johnny Voodoo’s Barber Shop is the Best Barber Shop in Brisbane?

Is it the best barber in Brisbane?

You will have to decide when you get down there and experience it for yourself.

I’ll tell you this though, from some of my last haircuts and experiences I’d have no hesitation to recommend you go to Johnny Voodoo’s Barber Shop and also for myself driving back down there to get my haircut again, it was great!

I didn’t want to take any pictures inside unless the head honcho was there and also I had run out of time, so next time I’m down that way for a haircut I’ll take some of the inside of Johnny Voodoo’s and put them up here, keep an eye out.
