Is Costco Gold Coast going to be the new location for Costco in Queensland?
People who have been following me know that I have had a soft spot for Costco in Queensland.
This is from having followed the news and keeping up to date from construction right through to opening of the first Queensland Costco here.
Recently I had a bit of news come to me regarding a possible Gold Coast Costco site.
I have done a bit of research too and it looks like it maybe legitimate news too.
Well, it is at least very believable.
When doing the standard Google searches on things like Costco Gold Coast and more.
There isn’t too much information that comes up at all!
Only a few speculators from newspapers from a while ago about Costco Gold Coast being in the future plans for Costco.
This was of course done when the other Queensland Costco was opening.
So what’s the Costco Gold Coast news?
I was told there is a site sold just west of the Gold Coast Markets that has, at the time of writing this, a timber business currently operating on part of it and also has a car park on the land.
It was indicated to that person that the new owners are Costco Australia.
So this means, if true, that the new Queensland Costco could be Costco Gold Coast or Costco Carrara?
The business that is on the site is apparently moving on because the site has or is being been sold.
I couldn’t find any information regarding the sale of this land in Carrara anywhere.
But this part of the puzzle could be true because the business currently on the land has a pop up on its website telling people they are moving from January 2017.
After 24 years in the same place you just don’t relocate your business that easily do you?
You would if the land had been sold to a massive supermarket chain though?
So this adds fuel to the fire that the Costco Gold Coast information could be true.
Other than the traffic impact for that area if Costco Gold Coast / Costco Carrara was to go ahead there would be an amazing population centre for Costco to draw on for sales.
As well the ease for people from South Brisbane to head down the highway to the Gold Coast for the day if they wanted to get their Costco shopping fix rather than heading up north.
Another point to add here quickly if this information is true.
Opening Costco Gold Coast before The Games?
Is the plan for Costco Gold Coast / Costco Carrara to have their grand opening before The Games in 2018?
It would make sense in this regard too.
Imagine the extra brand exposure for Costco Australia in this regard.
Being settled in the hub of Carrara with the amount of cars that drive past that site everyday.
I wonder if they could finish the construction in timeframe before the Commonwealth Games given how long the other Costco in Queensland took to build.
So, whether true or not, the information is pretty strong that Costco Gold Coast or Costco Carrara maybe the next Costco in Queensland.
Time will tell, I will certainly be keeping an eye out from now!
If you have anymore information, let me know below.
Also thanks to the person who dropped by my site too and gave me a bit of information.
It will be interesting if it happens, and how quick we might be talking about Costco on the Gold Coast.
Update
I had someone drop by and leave some information for me.
They said that they had heard it was Bunnings that had reportedly purchased the Carrara site.
I haven’t been able to find anymore information on the Costco Gold Coast or on the land sale as yet.
But I will keep on looking.

Apparently Bunnings bought the land you refer to in your Costco Carrara article. That’s what I’ve heard….

I can definitely confirm that the site east of the roundabout and west of the markets has been acquired by Bunnings in June 2018 and is currently awaiting regulatory approval before moving on to construction.
This info was supplied to directly to me by a senior Bunnings exec known to me socially.
I was shopping a Costco Northlakes in Dec 18 and whinging to a manager there with a US accent re the 95 min drive from the GC and how disappointed I was at Ipswich getting Costco No. 2 and not Logan and how it seemed illogical.
His next comment floored me. He indicated the company was in negotiations re two possible sites on the GC. I said you mean Logan and he countered with Gold Coast proper but would not say anything further. Re location.
This company really does play the long game and must have had this strategy in mind when they selected Ipswich over Logan. If you check a map this becomes clear.
The largest population catchment in Queensland not served by Costco is the Gold Coast.
All I can say is bring it on.

Thanks for that information Mark and thanks for dropping by!
I thought quite a while back that it hadn’t been bought by Costco and there certainly is plenty of land down on the Gold Coast suitable.
You would hope where they choose to put it won’t put anymore pressure on the highway and the entry/exit points as the traffic is already pretty bad there.
Mind you, the Northlakes Costco is a punish to get in and out of too!
I wonder if they’ll be looking further up the coast like Oxenford / Helensvale or further south past the Robina / Burleigh area?
It’s a big choice for them.
Again thanks for dropping in.
Greg Annett says
It would be more logical to put the store in the northern Gold Coast for 2 reasons: firstly this is a growing area between Coomera and Pimpama, and secondly because it would also be more accessible to people from the southern part of Brisbane ie Logan, who currently have a 45 minute trip to Northlakes, whereas it would be a 30 minute trip to the northern Gold Coast.
Troy Spro says
This is true Greg, and a bigger catchment area for them in the long run.
This is of course if they don’t put a Costco in Burleigh or Tweed in the end too!
Thanks for dropping by and for your thoughts.
Does anyone else have any ideas where the next Costco should be in the Gold Coast area?
